The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate in the field of gravitational wave searches with Professor Vuk Mandic. The appointment start date is flexible, but June 1, 2015 would be preferred. The appointment is for one year, subject to availability of funds, with possibility of annual renewals.
The research would focus on searches for stochastic gravitational-wave background with Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), as well as on technology development for future generations of gravitational-wave detectors. The candidate will have opportunities to analyze data acquired by the upcoming Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational wave detectors, in order to make new and more sensitive measurements of the energy density in gravitational waves, to study implications of these measurements for different cosmological and astrophysical models, and to publish journal articles summarizing the results of these studies. The candidate will also have opportunities to work on development of the underground seismometer array at the Homestake mine, and to analyze the data acquired by the array for purposes of assessing the advantages of the underground environment for future gravitational wave detectors. Background in gravitational-wave physics is not required.
